AL Game: Greenberg belts #58 in loss to Yanks

Aug. 4, 1938

Hank Greenberg and Rudy York hit back to back homeruns off Monte Pearson in the 4th inning to give the Detroit Tigers a short lived 2-1 lead over the New York Yankees. For Greenberg, it was his 58th homer of the season as he continues his assault on the ML homerun record of 60. The Yankees however, were able to come back in this game on the strength of a Joe Gordon 3 run blast in the 8th and win the game 4-3.

Monte Pearson was able to finish what he started and was credited with a
complete game at Briggs Stadium where the New York Yankees beat the Detroit
Tigers by the score of 4 to 3.

Pearson(7-8) pitched a fine game. He went 9 innings and surrended up 10 hits
and 3 walks and gave up 2 homeruns. Detroit had a chance to come back in the
9th but they came up short.

Vern Kennedy(8-7) was the loser. Joe McCarthy was in a talkative mood in the
clubhouse, 'Great game! If only we could win all of the close ones - wouldn't
that be nice! Since that's not going to happen, I think I'll savor this one
for a little while.'
