1938 NL Final Standings

October 3rd, 1938

Wow! What a finish to the 1938 NL season. The Cincinnati Reds win the pennant! The surprising  Reds, who were never all alone in 1st place during the year, won the NL Championship on the last day of the season. The New York Giants came up a game short due to their 8-20 record in Sept/Oct while the Chicago Cubs made a valiant effort to end up on top by going 19-10 during the same period. The Pittsburgh Pirates record of 11-18 in Sept/Oct eliminated them from winning the pennant.
Cincinnati played on an even keel for much of the season while the other 3 contenders had times of extreme highs and lows. That steady brand of baseball allowed the Reds to slip by everyone at the end and claim the NL Championship.
Several games were lost (not played) during the 1938 season, mainly from The Great Hurricane of 1938, and the league chose not to make up all of them. Had they done so, a different outcome may have resulted but we'll never know. The Chicago Cubs won the title 'in real life' but underperformed by 6 games in my asplayed replay. Pittsburgh underperformed by 4 games while Cincinnati over-performed by 3 games. All this was enough for the Reds to grab the title.
Cincinnati will face the AL Detroit Tigers in the 1938 World Series.

There's only 8 days left in the NL regular season and who ends up on top is still a battle between 4 teams. The New York Giants have struggled all month while the Chicago Cubs have gained a lot of ground on the back of a 13 game winning streak. The Cincinnati Reds are still in the hunt and the Pittsburgh Pirates, who have also struggled this month, still have a good shot at the title.

The red hot Chicago Cubs took both games of a doubleheader against the reeling 1st place New York Giants today and moved within striking distance as the 1938 NL season comes into its' final weeks. NY is 5-12 so far in September and Chicago is 11-4 while riding a 7 game winning streak. The losses also allowed Cincinnati and Pittsburgh to move even closer to the top spot. It looks to be a wild finish is in store this season.

The 1938 NL season has turned the page on July and the Pittsburgh Pirates find themselves in 1st place. But their hold on that position is very tenuous as the 4 top teams are within 2.5 games of each other. Even the 5th place Chicago Cubs have a good shot at the top spot being only 6.5 games back. The Pirates and the Cincinnati Reds had the best records in the month of July, hence their position in the League Standings. The New York Giants played just 1 game over .500 in July but only dropped to 2nd place in the standings. The St. Louis Cardinals gave another strong showing in July, led by hitting wonder Johnny Mize, and are only 2.5 games back. The way this season has gone so far, the season standings will continue to see-saw to the end.

The New York Giants made an impressive showing in the month of June with their 20-8 record and it has propelled them into 1st place in the NL. The Pittsburgh Pirates and St. Louis Cardinals had a good month too, keeping them on the heels of the Giants. The Brooklyn Dodgers spiraled down the standings with a 6-17 record in June but are only 7 games behind.

The New York Giants have put together a 15-5 record so far this month, enough to propel them into 1st place in the NL standings. The Brooklyn Dodgers, who had been in 1st for most of the season, have been on a downward spiral this month and find themselves in 5th place with a sub .500 record.

After wining both games of a doubleheader against the Boston Braves in extra innings, the St. Louis Cardinals moved into 1st place in the NL for the first time this season. The red-hot Cardinals have won 7 in a row and 9 out of their last 10. They now hold a 2.5 game lead over 2nd place Brooklyn.

1938 NL Standings

Half way through the month of May the Pittsburgh Pirates have moved into 1st place in the NL for the first time this season.  The surprising Brooklyn Dodgers had been in 1st since the start of the year. The Pirates are 2nd in both team batting and team pitching in the league. The Chicago Cubs and New York Giants, preseason favorites, continue to stumble. The St. Louis Cardinals are only 1.5 games back and are being led by slugging 1st baseman Johnny Mize (.456, 7, 23). Brooklyn pitcher Luke Hamlin (5-0, 1.79) has been the top hurler so far this season.

1938 NL Standings

May 1, 1938

The opening month of the 1938 season has come to a close. While the month was a short one, as far as games played is concerned, there have been a few surprise starts to the season. The Brooklyn Dodgers, who many thought was a second division team, are off to the best start in the NL with an 8-3 record. The Dodgers have been the best hitting team in the league so far, led by Johnny Hudson (.405, 11rbi, ) and Dolph Camilli (.302, 14rbi). Brooklyn pitcher Freddie Fitzsimmons is 2-0 and both wins were complete game shutouts. The other surprise has been the poor start from the New York Giants and Chicago Cubs. Those two clubs have finished 1,2 the last two seasons and are expected to be the main contenders for the top spot in the NL again this year.
