1938 NL Game Stories September 23th

 After taking both games of a doubleheader against the Philadelphia Phillies yesterday, the Chicago Cubs repeated the feat today, winning 5-3 and 6-1. Chicago has now won 12 in a row and moved into 3rd place in the standings, only 3 games behind slumping New York.
The Cincinnati Reds defeated the struggling Pittsburgh Pirates in today's other scheduled game and are now 2 games behind NY. Pittsburgh dropped to 4th in the standings with the loss and are now 5 games out.

Stan Hack had 2 base hits as the blistering-hot Chicago Cubs defeated the
Philadelphia Phillies by a score of 5 to 3 at Baker/Shibe.
 
Kirby Higbe(1-1) pitched well for Chicago in their victory.  He went 7 innings
allowing 7 hits and 1 walk.  Philadelphia went down quietly in the bottom of
the 9th.  
 
Jack Russell recorded his 9th save.  Hugh Mulcahy(9-18) was the loser.  He
pitched 7 and 2/3 innings and surrendered 7 hits and 3 walks.Chicago added
another win to their mounting winning streak.

At Baker/Shibe the hapless Philadelphia Phillies were battered 6 to 1 by the
smoking-hot Chicago Cubs.
 
Philadelphia was unable to recover after Chicago went ahead in the top of the
3rd inning plating 2 runs.  Stan Hack led off and started the attack as he
drew a walk.  Billy Herman followed and he drew a walk.  Frank Demaree then
reached on an error.  Augie Galan came up and he hit a deep fly.  Carl
Reynolds came up to bat and drew a walk.  Gabby Hartnett was the next batter,
but he struck out.  That early scoring was all that Tex Carleton(5-13)
needed.  Chicago totaled 8 hits on the afternoon.  
 
Charlie Root earned the save, his 9th.  Al Hollingsworth(6-17) was tagged with
the loss.  For Chicago, the victory kept their winning streak on the march.

Ernie Lombardi slammed a homerun and had 2 RBI at Forbes Field as the
Cincinnati Reds beat the floundering Pittsburgh Pirates 11 to 4.
 
Pittsburgh was unable to claim the lead after Cincinnati went ahead in the 3rd
inning scoring 3 runners on 3 hits.  The biggest moment was provided by Frank
McCormick who deflated the mood of the partisan fans when he doubled plating
two runs.  Cincinnati out-hit Pittsburgh for the game, 16 hits to 8.  
 
The victory went to Bucky Walters(14-15) who went 8 innings, allowing 4 runs.
The loss was charged to Cy Blanton(14-11).  He was knocked around,
surrendering 8 runs in 4 and 2/3 innings.

Mel Ott of the New York Giants had a big day in both games of a doubleheader against the Pittsburgh Pirates today. Ott hit 2 hr in each game, 4 for the day, and drove in 7 runs allowing the Giants to take both games from the Pirates. The wins allowed NY to open their lead over 2nd place Pittsburgh to 4.5 games.

innings.  Chicago had 14 hits for the afternoon.  
 
Lou Fette(11-16) suffered the loss.  He got hit pretty hard, allowing 10 hits
and 3 walks in 3 innings.  With this win, Chicago has a 73-63 record.  They
have been 7-3 lately.  With the loss Boston now has a record of 59-76.

Freddie Fitzsimmons allowed Burleigh Grimes to rest his bullpen, tossing a
complete game as the Brooklyn Dodgers defeated the Cincinnati Reds by the
score of 6 to 4 at Ebbets Field.
 
Brooklyn brought 3 runs across the plate in the bottom of the 6th inning when
they had 3 base hits.  They ended up being the winning runs.  Cincinnati
out-hit Brooklyn 9 to 6, but Brooklyn ended up with more runs.  
 
The win was credited to Fitzsimmons(13-8) who went the whole way allowing 4
runs. Johnny Vander Meer(12-10) took the loss.  He pitched 8 innings allowing
6 hits and 8 walks.

Brooklyn tallied 1 run in the 4th inning.  After the 4th inning, neither team
was able to score.  The victory went to Frankhouse(4-7) who went the distance
allowing 2 runs. Bucky Walters(13-15) was tagged with the loss.  He allowed 3
runs and 7 hits in 7 innings.

Right fielder Mel Ott launched 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI as the New York Giants
defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 8 to 4 at Polo Grounds.
 
Ott enjoyed a fine day at the plate.  He smashed a solo-shot out of the park
in the 2nd inning and lost the ball over the fence for three runs in the 3rd
inning.  Pittsburgh had 11 hits in the game while New York had 8, but New
York had the more timely hits.  
 
Hal Schumacher(14-9) allowed 4 runs in 6 and 1/3 innings, and picked up the
victory. Schumacher got help from Jumbo Brown who was credited with his 10th
save.  The loss was charged to Cy Blanton(14-10).  He was knocked around,
surrendering 8 runs in 3 and 1/3 innings.  
 
The New York ballclub's record now stands at a league leading 80-55.
Pittsburgh has a record of 75-57 after the loss.

inning, bombed a two-run dinger in the 4th inning and cracked a solo homerun
in the 6th inning.  New York finished with 9 hits in the victory.  
 
Harry Gumbert(20-8) got credit for the victory, pitching 8 and 1/3 innings and
allowing 4 runs. Dick Coffman preserved the game for Gumbert, recording his
his 9th save.  Ed Brandt(5-6) absorbed the loss.  
 
 

 

Paul Derringer wins 20th game

September 7, 1938

Cincinnati's Paul Derringer became the 1st pitcher in the Major Leagues to win 20 games this season with a complete game 1-0 shutout victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Bob Klinger(10-7) ended up with the loss.  'It's a disheartening loss, no
question about it' said Pie Traynor 'But we have to get over it and get ready
for the next game.'

The 1938 All Star game was played today at Crosley Field, home of the NL Cincinnati Reds. The National League prevailed over the American League by the score of 5-1. The NL scored a run in the 1st inning and never looked back as the AL could only muster 5 hits off the dominant NL pitching.

The New York Giants have gotten off to a slow start this season but todays win over the Pittsburgh Pirates featured great performances from two of the players the Giants will count on most to get them to the top of the league. Pitcher Carl Hubbell threw a complete game shutout and Mel Ott smacked 3 home runs and had 5 RBI in the 9-0 victory.

run in the 5th inning and clubbed a solo home run in the 8th inning.  New
York had many opportunities throughout the game and scored in 6 separate
innings.  
 
Hubbell(3-3) went the distance for the shutout. The losing pitcher was Ed
Brandt(2-1).  New York scored big getting 5 runs off him in 4 and 2/3
innings.  
 
'I felt great out there today,' Ott said, 'Maybe I should make a regular habit
of getting to bed on time!'

The Brooklyn Dodgers continued their winning ways by defeating the Pittsburgh Pirates 8-1 today at Ebbets Field.
Pitcher Luke Hamlin won his league leading 7th game and lowered his league leading ERA to 1.54. Dolph Camilli chipped in with 2 homers and 4 RBI, upping his league leading RBI count to 32.
