1938 SOM AsPlayed Replay
My 1938 MLB asplayed replay is underway. As usual, I'll be trying to manage the Detroit Tigers to an AL Championship. It'll be a tough task this season because of a great NY team along with good Boston and Cleveland teams. The Tigers look to have a very good lineup but the pitching is 'suspect' at best.

1938 World Series Line Scores
The Detroit Tigers won the 1938 World series 4 games to 2. The Cincinnati Reds out hit Detroit in all 6 games but Detroit did just enough to win The Series.
1938 World Series Game 6: Detroit Tigers are World Champions!
October 12, 1938
The Detroit Tigers win the 1938 World Series! In a dramatic 9th inning rally, the Tigers came back from a 1 run deficit and won game 6 by the score of 2-1. In a well pitched game by both teams starters, Detroit entered the 9th inning trailing 1-0 and stared at the possibility of having to play a game 7 in Cincinnati. After the Reds pitcher Peaches Davis got the first out in the 9th, Hank Greenberg was safe at 1st on a throwing error by 3rd baseman Lew Riggs. Jo-Jo White came in to run for Greenberg who represented the tying run. Rudy York then doubled to center scoring White and advanced to 3rd on cf Harry Craft's throwing error. Tony Piet then came in to run for York at 3rd. With Greenberg and York out of the game, Detroit was going all-out to win the game now. The next batter, Pete Fox was able to hit a flyball deep enough to leftfield to score Piet from 3rd and give the Tigers a 2-1 lead. Al Benton came in to pitch the bottom of the 9th for Detroit. He retired the Reds in order to preserve the win and make the Tigers World Series Champions.

1938 World Series Game 5
October 10, 1938
Game 5 of the 1938 World Series at Briggs Stadium in Detroit was a thriller won by the Cincinnati Reds by the score of 2-1. Down 3 games to 1 the Reds had their backs to the wall and faced elimination at the hands of the Tigers. Cincinnati starter Johnny Vander Meer and Detroit's Tommy Bridges locked up in a scoreless dual until the bottom of the 7th inning. With runners on 1st and 2nd and 2 outs, Detroit's manager Del Baker decided to pinch hit for Bridges. Birdie Tebbetts came through with a run scoring single and the Tigers had the first lead of the game, 1-0. Cincinnati came to bat in the 9th inning desperately trying to find a way to score a run, and they did. Tiger reliever Slick Coffman got the first out of the inning and looked to have out number 2 with a strikeout of Frank McCormick. But Detroit catcher Rudy York couldn't hold on to the 3rd strike and in a "RARE PLAY", McCormick made it down to 1st safely. The Reds went on to load the bases and with 2 out Harry Craft singled in 2 runs. The Tigers went down in order in the bottom of the 9th and Cincinnati escaped with a 2-1 victory. The Series will now shift back to Cincinnati for Game 6 with Detroit holding a 3 games to 2 lead.

In a great finish the Cincinnati Reds came back in the top of the ninth and
held on to win over the Detroit Tigers by a score of 2 to 1 at Briggs
Stadium.
Cincinnati erupted with the game winning runs in the 9th inning with 2 runs on
2 hits. After an out was recorded, Frank McCormick keyed the rally when he
reached on an error. Ernie Lombardi was next and he doubled. Ival Goodman
then was walked intentionally to load the bases. After another out, Harry
Craft came to the plate and stroked a single. Justin Stein came to the plate
and drew a walk to load the bases. The game was a scoreless duel until the
7th inning.
Jim Weaver(1-0) got the win allowing no runs in 1/3 of an inning. Joe
Cascarella got the save, his 2nd. Slick Coffman(0-1) was the losing pitcher
in relief.
Bill McKechnie was all smiles after the game, 'To pull a game out in your last
at bats, is a beautiful feeling - and did you see how quiet it got out there?
You could have heard a pin drop when we took the lead. But, hey, that's what
makes baseball so great - as the great sage Yogi Berra says, 'it's not over
'til its over.'

1938 World Series Game 4
October 9, 1938
In a very exciting game, the Detroit Tigers were able to come from behind twice in the late innings before defeating the Cincinnati Reds in extra innings 6-5. Paul Derringer and the Reds had a 4-1 lead over the Tigers heading into the bottom of the 8th inning. Detroit started a rally with 2 outs that culminated in Hank Greenberg's 3 run homer, tying the game at 4. Cincinnati took the lead again in the top of the 9th with a single run but had another run cut down at the plate. Detroit ss Billy Rogell led off the bottom of the 9th and hit a solo shot, tying the game up again and sending it into extra innings. Cincinnati was held scoreless in the top of the 10th before the dramatic ending to the contest in the bottom of the inning. Derringer was still pitching for the Reds and got the first 2 outs before Greenberg came to the plate with the bases empty. After a conference on the mound, Cincinnati decided to walk Hank intentionally and face Rudy York who had only 1 hit thru the first 4 games of the series. The strategy backfired. York took Derringer deep to center field and Greenberg tried scoring from 1st. There was a close play at the plate but Greenberg slid in under the tag giving the Tigers a 6-5 victory. Detroit now leads in the series 3 games to 1.

Cullenbine tripled to left-center field and after Dixie Walker struckout for out number 2, Baker sent Birdie Tebbetts up to bat for Jo-Jo White. Reds manager Bill McKecknie decided to stick with the lefty Vander Meer but Tebbetts came through with a sharp single to left scoring Cullenbine and giving Detroit a 4-3 lead. Harry Eisenstat came on in relief for the Tigers in the bottom of the 9th and set the Reds down in order for a 4-3 Detroit win. Cincinnati once again out hit Detroit in the game and had a runner thrown out at the plate in the 1st inning, leaving the bases loaded. The teams will travel to Detroit now with the Tigers holding 2-0 lead in the Series.
