1938 AL Final Standings

October 3, 1938

The Detroit Tigers won my 1938 AL asplayed replay Championship by going 95-59 and finishing 8 games ahead of the 2nd place New York Yankees.  The Tigers over-performed their 'actual record' by 11 games while the Yankees under-performed by 13 games. This 'swing' in performance was more than enough to allow Detroit to fairly easily win the pennant. Both Boston and Cleveland also slightly under-performed during my replay.
While Detroit's pitching was woeful at best, it was their hitting that led the way to a Championship. Their total of 992 runs scored was much more than runner up Boston's 885. The Tigers average game scoring was 6.4 to 5.3. The Yankees pitching was tops in the league by a wide margin but they had the worst W-L record in 1-run games in the league.
Detroit will face the NL Cincinnati Reds in the 1938 World Series.

1938 AL Final News Recap and League Leaders

October 3, 1938

The Detroit Tigers Hank Greenberg re-wrote the record books during my 1938 asplayed replay. Greenberg won the AL MVP by leading the Tigers to a 1st place finish while shattering the ML HR and RBI records. He ended up with 86 HR and 216 RBI! I've never had anyone perform to this level in all my years of playing SOM baseball.
If not for Greenberg, Boston's Jimmy Foxx would have gotten all the attention this year and won the Triple Crown. He also broke the former HR record by hitting 63, won the batting title with a .392 BA and finished 2nd in RBI with 178.
Cleveland's Bob Feller won the Cy Young Award by going 21-10, with 249 K's and an ERA of 3.58.  New York's Lefty Gomez finished a very close 2nd in the award voting by going 21-6,with a 2.80 ERA, and 117 K's.

1938 NL Final Standings

October 3rd, 1938

Wow! What a finish to the 1938 NL season. The Cincinnati Reds win the pennant! The surprising  Reds, who were never all alone in 1st place during the year, won the NL Championship on the last day of the season. The New York Giants came up a game short due to their 8-20 record in Sept/Oct while the Chicago Cubs made a valiant effort to end up on top by going 19-10 during the same period. The Pittsburgh Pirates record of 11-18 in Sept/Oct eliminated them from winning the pennant.
Cincinnati played on an even keel for much of the season while the other 3 contenders had times of extreme highs and lows. That steady brand of baseball allowed the Reds to slip by everyone at the end and claim the NL Championship.
Several games were lost (not played) during the 1938 season, mainly from The Great Hurricane of 1938, and the league chose not to make up all of them. Had they done so, a different outcome may have resulted but we'll never know. The Chicago Cubs won the title 'in real life' but underperformed by 6 games in my asplayed replay. Pittsburgh underperformed by 4 games while Cincinnati over-performed by 3 games. All this was enough for the Reds to grab the title.
Cincinnati will face the AL Detroit Tigers in the 1938 World Series.

1938 NL Final News Recap and League Leaders

The final standings and league leaders in the top categories for the 1938 NL season.
St. Louis Cardinal Johnny Mize won the NL MVP by a slim margin over New York's Mel Ott. Mize's BA dipped below the .400 mark during the last week of the season but he still won the batting title with a .394  average. Mize also lead the league in RBI with 137 and finished 2nd to Ott in HR with 34.
Cincinnati's Paul Derringer wins the Cy Young Award by posting #'s of 22-11, a 2.79ERA and 128K's. He had 6 shutouts among his 24 complete games.

1938 AL Games Stories: Detroit clinches the pennant

September 27, 1938

The Detroit Tigers were victorious in game 2 of a doubleheader against the St. Louis Browns today and clinched the 1938 AL Championship with the win. After dropping the 1st game to the Browns 4-1, the Tigers scored a run in the bottom of the 9th in game 2 for a 6-5 victory.
Other worthy notes of today's games: Boston's Jimmy Foxx hit his 61st HR of the season making him the 2nd player this year to break the former record of 60 hit by Babe Ruth in 1927. Cleveland's Bob Feller won his 21st game of the season, striking out 10. New York's Lefty Gomez became the 2nd pitcher in the AL to get 20 wins this season after NY defeated the Washington Senators 11-5.

The Boston Red Sox edged the Philadelphia Athletics at Shibe Park by the score
of 6 to 5.
 
Bill Harris(5-6) had a fairly solid outing.  He went 6 and 2/3 innings and
surrended up 10 hits and 1 walk.  Philadelphia had a chance to come back in
the 9th but they came up short.  
 
Harris got help from Ted Olson who earned his 1st save.  Buck Ross(9-15) was
the losing pitcher.  He was hit hard and gave up 11 hits and 2 walks in 6
innings.  
 
'I was a little good, a little bad and a little ugly.' said Harris, 'I was
just giving us a chance to win.'

Left fielder Jeff Heath blasted 2 homeruns and had 6 RBI and Bob Feller mowed
down 10 Chicago batters as the Cleveland Indians defeated the Chicago White
Sox by a score of 14 to 5 at League/Municipal.
 
Heath enjoyed a big day at the plate.  He slapped a base-hit which plated a
run in the 1st inning, clubbed a two-run home run in the 2nd inning, smacked
a single in the 4th inning, cracked a two-run shot in the 5th inning and
doubled which scored a run in the 7th inning.  Offensively, Cleveland was a
juggernaut.  They scored in 6 separate innings.  
 
Feller(21-9) picked up the complete game victory, allowing 5 runs. Monty
Stratton(10-10) was the loser.  Everyone seemed to enjoy the performance of
Feller - except Chicago.  Jimmy Dykes lamented, 'He just was 'on' this
afternoon.  He was keeping our guys off balance all game.  A fine game by a
good strikeout pitcher - makes it a fun game for the hometown fans -
unfortunately we were the visitors!'

Jim Walkup went the distance and George McQuinn had 3 base hits as the St.
Louis Browns topped the Detroit Tigers by a score of 4 to 1 at Briggs
Stadium.
 
St. Louis won the game with a rally in the 9th inning with 3 runs on 2 base
hits.  Mel Almada got things going when he lashed a single.  McQuinn was next
and he laid down a sacrifice bunt.  Mel Mazzera struck out, unable to help
the rally.  Harlond Clift was up next and he was walked intentionally.  Al
Benton then uncorked a pitch that was ruled a passed ball.  Joe Grace
extended the rally and was walked intentionally to load the bases.  Red Kress
stepped up next and he drew a walk.  Sam Harshaney then hit a single.  St.
Louis had a total of 12 hits for the game.  
 
The victory went to Walkup(4-5) who went the distance allowing 1 run. The
losing pitcher was Benton(4-6).  He got hit pretty hard, allowing 12 hits and
6 walks in 9 innings.

In a dramatic ending at Briggs Stadium the Detroit Tigers won in their last
at-bat beating the dreadful St. Louis Browns by the count of 6 to 5.
 
The game was decided in the bottom of the 9th inning.  Dixie Walker ripped a
one-base hit.  After an out was recorded, Hank Greenberg came to bat and drew
a walk.  Pete Fox was a strikeout victim, unable to help out.  Billy Rogell
followed next and he doubled giving Detroit the win and sending the home town
fans into a frenzy.  Detroit finished with 12 hits in the victory.  
 
Roxie Lawson(15-6) got the win allowing 4 runs in 1 and 2/3 innings. Ed
Linke(0-3) took the loss in relief.  He surrendered 1 run and 2 hits in 2/3
of an inning.

Lou Gehrig lofted one into the 'cheap seats' and had 3 RBI as the New York
Yankees outscored the Washington Senators 11 to 5.
 
Washington was unable to climb back into it after New York went ahead for good
in the 2nd inning plating an isolated run using 2 hits.  New York ended up
with 13 hits for the game while Washington had 10.  
 
The win was credited to Lefty Gomez(20-6) who went 5 and 1/3 innings allowing
5 runs. Wes Ferrell earned the save, his 1st.  Dutch Leonard(17-10) ended up
with the loss.  He was not very effective, surrendering 8 runs in 4 and 1/3
innings.

There's only 8 days left in the NL regular season and who ends up on top is still a battle between 4 teams. The New York Giants have struggled all month while the Chicago Cubs have gained a lot of ground on the back of a 13 game winning streak. The Cincinnati Reds are still in the hunt and the Pittsburgh Pirates, who have also struggled this month, still have a good shot at the title.
