1938 AL Game: Detroit Wins Wild Game Over Cleveland

July 4, 1938

The Detroit Tigers came from behind to defeat the Cleveland Indians in extra innings 12-11 in the 1st game of an Independence Day doubleheader. There were plenty of fireworks in a game that saw 6 HR's and 31 total hits. Detroit's Charlie Gehringer went 5 for 5 and scored 5 times while Hank Greenberg hit his 42nd HR and drove in 3 runs to give him 100 RBI on the season. But it was Rudy York who won the game for Detroit with a 3 run HR in the bottom of the 10th after the Indians had taken the lead with 2 runs in the top of the 10th.
