1938 AL Standings

August 1, 1938

My Detroit Tigers continue to play WAY above their actual record in 1938 and have a 9.5 game lead over 2nd place Washington. Meanwhile, New York, Cleveland, and Boston continue to play well below their actual record in '38. There's still a long way to go in the season but it looks as if Detroit would have to have a major collapse to not win the AL pennant. The Tigers have scored 611 runs, 110 more than the next highest scoring team, the Washington Senators. Their pitching has been mediocre but if you can score an average of 6.64 runs per game, mediocre may be just good enough.

1938 AL Standings and League Leaders

August 1, 1938

The 1938 AL season heads into August with the Detroit Tigers, led by Hank Greenberg, still in 1st place. Greenberg has been nothing short of phenomenal this season. He's destined to shatter Babe Ruth's record of 60 HR and has a good shot at setting a new RBI record. Boston's Jimmy Foxx is having a season for the ages himself, he's 2nd in all 3 of the top hitting categories.  New York's Lefty Gomez and Cleveland's Bob Feller have been the top pitchers in the league up to this point.

1938 NL Standings

August 1, 1938

The 1938 NL season has turned the page on July and the Pittsburgh Pirates find themselves in 1st place. But their hold on that position is very tenuous as the 4 top teams are within 2.5 games of each other. Even the 5th place Chicago Cubs have a good shot at the top spot being only 6.5 games back. The Pirates and the Cincinnati Reds had the best records in the month of July, hence their position in the League Standings. The New York Giants played just 1 game over .500 in July but only dropped to 2nd place in the standings. The St. Louis Cardinals gave another strong showing in July, led by hitting wonder Johnny Mize, and are only 2.5 games back. The way this season has gone so far, the season standings will continue to see-saw to the end.

1938 NL Standings and League Leaders plus Overall Team Stats

August 1, 1938

St. Louis Cardinal Johnny Mize continues to lead the NL in many of the top hitting catagories. NY Giant Mel Ott continues to display his hitting prowess too. Cincinnati Red pitcher Paul Derringer at 16-5 with a 2.32 ERA is the top overall hurler in the league and the team's pitching staff as a whole is best in the NL. The Pittsburgh Pirates are 2nd in the league in both Team BA and Team ERA. That consistency is one reason they sit on top of the NL Standings.

1938 AL Game: Det. at NY. Greenberg Hits #50

July 17, 1938

Elden Auker pitched a fine game and Hank Greenberg hit his 50th homerun of the season while the Detroit Tigers put an end to their 6 game losing streak by defeating the New York Yankees 5-3. Auker lost his bid for a shutout in the 9th inning when Lou Gehrig connected for his 15th homerun of the year, but the Yankees came up short in their comeback effort.
