1938 AL Game: Det. at NY. Greenberg Hits #50

July 17, 1938

Elden Auker pitched a fine game and Hank Greenberg hit his 50th homerun of the season while the Detroit Tigers put an end to their 6 game losing streak by defeating the New York Yankees 5-3. Auker lost his bid for a shutout in the 9th inning when Lou Gehrig connected for his 15th homerun of the year, but the Yankees came up short in their comeback effort.

First baseman Hank Greenberg left the yard at Yankee Stadium as the Detroit
Tigers beat the New York Yankees 5 to 3.
 
Elden Auker(9-1) gave a fine effort for Detroit.  He was reached for 6 hits
and 6 walks in 8 and 1/3 innings.  For the game Detroit out-hit New York 12
to 6.  
 
Slick Coffman recorded the save, his 10th.  Spud Chandler(6-8) was tagged with
the loss.  He was knocked around by Detroit, allowing 10 hits and 4 walks in
7 innings.  
 
'Thankfully we got ourselves a win', Auker said.  'It's great to be back on
the winning side of things.'
