1938 AL Game: NY at Detroit

September 16, 1938

The New York Yankees came into Detroit for a big 3 game series between the top 2 teams in the AL. It would be the last time these teams would meet during the regular season and NY took game 1 by a score of 4-3. In today's contest, Yankee pitcher Lefty Grove was looking to become the 1st 20 game winner in the AL. After getting staked to a 3-0 lead in the 2nd inning Grove was chased from the mound in the 3rd by a big Tiger inning that featured Hank Greenberg hitting a 3 run bomb, giving Detroit the lead. The Tigers went on to score 7 in the inning and won a slugfest 9-8 over NY. Greenberg hit another hr later in the game, his league leading, record setting 76th of the season and had 5 rbi in the game. His rbi total is now at a league high of 190, one away from the ML record set by Hack Wilson of the NL in 1930. The win moved the Tigers ahead of 2nd place NY to 4.5 games.

Catcher Rudy York cracked 2 homeruns and Al Benton allowed Del Baker to rest
his bullpen, tossing a complete game as the mighty Detroit Tigers really laid
it on the Chicago White Sox 18 to 2.

York had a great day at the plate. He laced a single bringing in a run in the
1st inning, emptied the bases with a Grand Slam homerun in the 3rd inning and
belted a three-run homer in the 5th inning. Detroit kept the scorekeepers
busy in the 3rd inning which saw them plate 4 runs on 3 hits, the 4th inning
with 5 runs on 4 hits, the 5th inning when they had 4 runs on 4 hits and the
7th inning which saw them score 4 runs on 4 hits. Detroit totaled 18 hits on
the afternoon.

The victory was credited to Benton(3-5) who went the distance, allowing 2
runs. Jack Knott(8-7) took the loss. His ERA increased from 3.44 to 3.83 as
he allowed 10 runs in 3 innings.

York was jubilant after the game 'Let me see a box-score' he joked, 'I want to
see how that game looks on paper.'

1938 AL Standings

September 1, 1938

My Detroit Tigers continue to play well above their actual record in 1938 and have a nice lead at the top of the AL. Barring a complete collapse, the Tigers should win the AL pennant. No team has been able to stop their offensive attack, which has allowed their mediocre pitching to put up W's. Their average score thru 122 games is 6.4 to 5.6. New York has floundered this season, while Boston and Cleveland have played somewhat close to their actual records. Those 3 teams did have better records than Detroit in August, allowing them to close the gap a little bit. Despite posting the best pitching stats in the league, the Yankees have faltered offensively, resulting in their poor record (for them).

1938 AL News Recap

Heading into the stretch run of the season, Detroit's Hank Greenberg continues his HR onslaught and every one he hits is a new record. He stands at 70hr and is now setting sight on a new RBI record. Boston's Jimmy Foxx leads the AL in BA and would have a good shot at the Triple Crown if not for Greenberg. Cleveland's Bob Feller and Johnny Allen, along with New York's Lefty Gomez are the top pitchers in the league. All have 17 wins on the season.
