1938 NL Standings and League Leaders

June 2, 1938
The 1938 NL season is into the month of June and the surprise team of the year, the Brooklyn Dodgers, still sit on top of the league. The Dodgers are 2 games ahead of 2nd place St. Louis and continue to have a balanced attack of good hitting, led by Dolph Camilli, and good pitching, led by Luke Hamlin. St. Louis 1st baseman Johnny Mize looks as if he has designs on a Triple Crown this season. His .409 BA leads the NL while his 10 HR are tied for 1st and his 34 RBI are tied for 2nd.

1938 AL Standings and League Leaders

June 1, 1938

The 1938 AL season heads into June with the Detroit Tigers in 1st place. Detroit has a 3 game lead over New York while Cleveland and Washington are 4 back. Tiger 1st sacker Hank Greenberg and catcher/of Rudy York continue to put up impressive power numbers but Red Sox 1st baseman Jimmie Foxx is having the best start of anyone. Foxx's .441 BA leads the AL as does his 51 RBI.  His 15 home runs are 2nd in the league to Greenberg's 20. Cleveland's flame thrower, Bob Feller, has a league leading 8-1 record and his 62 strikeouts are also tops in the league.

Monte Pearson(2-3) thrilled the fans at Shibe Park as he crafted a no-hit
masterpiece against the ice-cold Philadelphia Athletics. The New York
Yankees won by a final score of 10 to 0.

Pearson was just too much for Philadelphia. He walked 2 Philadelphia batters.
The New York players and coaches started to leave Pearson alone with his
thoughts after the game reached the 7th inning. By the time the 9th inning
rolled around, you could hear a pin drop every time he went to his wind-up -
and an explosion after every out. The pitchers took over after the 4th
inning as neither team was able to score again.

Bud Thomas(3-3) was charged with the loss. New York scored big getting 8 runs
off him in 2 innings. 'I gave it everything I had. It's probably the
greatest day of my life,' Pearson said. 'I was out there focusing on my
catcher's glove, that's all. I just concentrated on pitching my game.'

1938 AL Game: Bsn at Det

September 14: Hammerin' Hank | Jewish Currents

May 24, 1938

It was a wild finish to the game at Briggs Stadium in Detroit this afternoon. After getting pounded by the Red Sox 14-10 while coming up short in their comeback attempt yesterday, the Tigers got pounded again but did come back to win the game 9-8 today. Boston starter Left Grove was sailing along until the wheels came off in the bottom of the 9th inning. Hank Greenberg (pictured) blasted a 2 run homer chasing Grove before Don Ross singled in the winning run. Detroit scored 5 runs in the inning to pull out the victory and send the crowd into frenzied celebration.

Hank Greenberg touched them all and had 3 RBI as the Detroit Tigers rallied
impressively to win in dramatic style over Boston Red Sox, 9 to 8.

Detroit came up with the deciding runs in the bottom of the 9th inning as they
scored 5 runs on 4 base hits. The crucial at-bat was provided by Greenberg
who electrified Briggs Stadium when he clubbed a two-run home run. Boston
was not lacking for run support as they scored in 6 separate innings, yet
victory eluded them as they seemed to forget that pitching is also needed to
win ballgames.

Roxie Lawson(3-0) went 1 inning allowing 1 run for the victory. Archie
McKain(0-3) took the loss in relief. He allowed 2 runs and 3 hits without
retiring a batter.

Del Baker was ebullient after the game, 'It's great to win a hard fought game
like that. Our guys just weren't going to be denied. And did you see the
fans - they were going wild! Yes sir, a very enjoyable win this afternoon!'

1938 NL Standings

May 16, 1938

Half way through the month of May the Pittsburgh Pirates have moved into 1st place in the NL for the first time this season.  The surprising Brooklyn Dodgers had been in 1st since the start of the year. The Pirates are 2nd in both team batting and team pitching in the league. The Chicago Cubs and New York Giants, preseason favorites, continue to stumble. The St. Louis Cardinals are only 1.5 games back and are being led by slugging 1st baseman Johnny Mize (.456, 7, 23). Brooklyn pitcher Luke Hamlin (5-0, 1.79) has been the top hurler so far this season.

Tiger Update: May13, 1938

May 13, 1938

The Detroit Tigers returned home last night after a long 10 game road trip that was very successful. The Tigers went 8-2 on the trip and are now 14-6 on the season, good for 1st place and a 3 game lead in the AL. The teams' hitting attack has been spectacular and the pitching better than expected. On the road trip the Tigers scored 68 runs, an average of 6.8/game. The Yankee's Lefty Gomez was the only pitcher that was able to tame the Tigers' bats. Hank Greenberg (.361, 13, 26) and Rudy York (.362, 9, 21) have led the offensive charge while Vern Kennedy (4-0), Elden Auker (3-1), and Roxie Lawson (2-0) have headed up the pitching staff.
Through their first 20 games Detroit has only played 4 at home but now they'll play the next 11 games on home turf.

1938 AL Standings

May 1, 1938

The 1938 MLB season opening month of April has come to a close with the Cleveland Indians on top of the AL. My Detroit Tigers are in 2nd, 1 game behind. Tiger 1st baseman Hank Greenberg has gotten off to a tremendous start by hitting 9 home runs and driving in 16, tops in MLB in both categories. The Indians have been powered by 3rd baseman Ken Keltner and shortstop Lynn Lary. Lary is hitting a league leading .500 while Keltner is at .465 and is tied with Greenberg with 16 rbi. Young pitcher Bob Feller is 3-0 and Mel Harder is 2-0 for the Tribe.

1938 NL Standings

May 1, 1938

The opening month of the 1938 season has come to a close. While the month was a short one, as far as games played is concerned, there have been a few surprise starts to the season. The Brooklyn Dodgers, who many thought was a second division team, are off to the best start in the NL with an 8-3 record. The Dodgers have been the best hitting team in the league so far, led by Johnny Hudson (.405, 11rbi, ) and Dolph Camilli (.302, 14rbi). Brooklyn pitcher Freddie Fitzsimmons is 2-0 and both wins were complete game shutouts. The other surprise has been the poor start from the New York Giants and Chicago Cubs. Those two clubs have finished 1,2 the last two seasons and are expected to be the main contenders for the top spot in the NL again this year.

1938 AL Game: Det. at St. Louis

April 26, 1938

Detroit Tiger Hank Greenberg has been the talk of MLB early this season, but his teammate Rudy York grabbed the headlines in Detroit's15-4 pasting of the St. Louis Browns today. York hit 3 home runs and drove in 7 as the Tiger batters lit up the scoreboard. Greenberg added 2 rbi to his AL leading total of 15 and after York's power display, the Tigers have given notice to the rest of the league that they are a force to be reckoned with.

Rudy York launched 3 homeruns and had 7 RBI at Sportsman's Park as the Detroit
Tigers, running on all cylinders, ripped the St. Louis Browns by a large 15
to 4 margin.

York really lit it up for Detroit. The St. Louis fans let him have it for
what he did to their boys. He belted a three-run homer in the 1st inning,
popped a two-run clout over the fence in the 2nd inning and cracked a two-run
shot in the 6th inning. Detroit provided plenty of action in the 1st inning
which saw them score 4 runs on 3 hits and the 2nd inning which saw them plate
6 runs on 5 hits. Detroit had 17 hits for the game and St. Louis had 14.

Elden Auker(2-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 6 innings and allowing 3
runs. Slick Coffman recorded his 1st save. Oral Hildebrand(0-1) suffered the
loss. He surrendered 6 hits and 2 walks in 1 and 1/3 innings.

'I had good swings today,' York said, 'Everything felt right'.
